I'm Kate Garrett, a watercolour artist and illustrator working from my studio in Devon. I specialise in hand-painted baby name pictures, creating each one individually with traditional watercolour, fine ink and coloured pencil.
Every painting begins with a blank sheet of watercolour paper. Letters are carefully drawn and filled with illustrations chosen especially for the child, from favourite animals and toys to family pets, flowers and treasured places.
No printed templates or computer-generated designs — just original artwork, painted by hand and created to become a lasting keepsake for a child and their family.

How each painting is created.
Every design begins with a pencil sketch
Each name painting is planned individually around the child’s name and the details you would like to include. I carefully compose the lettering and illustrations, considering how the different elements will fit together.
You can suggest favourite animals, toys, hobbies, colours or family pets. Photographs are particularly helpful when I am including a much-loved pet or a special toy.
Drawn in ink and painted in watercolour
Once the composition is ready, I use fine permanent ink to define the drawings before bringing them to life with professional artists’ watercolours.
I build up the colours carefully, adding small details and subtle variations to give each illustration its own character. Coloured pencil and fine pen help me finish the finer details.
Personal details make it unique
The illustrations are chosen and arranged to suit each commission. Animals might peep out between the letters, a favourite toy might sit alongside the name, or a familiar place could be woven into the background.
Where requested, I can incorporate family pets, meaningful locations and other little details that make the finished painting personal to the child.
Finished, mounted and ready to treasure
Once the painting is complete and dry, it can be mounted and framed in a choice of finishes to complement the artwork.
The frames use acrylic safety glazing, making them a practical choice for children's rooms. Unframed options are also available if you prefer to choose your own frame.
The finished picture is carefully packaged, ready to hang or give as a special present.
Meet the Artist – Kate Garrett
I've loved drawing and painting since childhood, winning national art awards at the ages of 12 and 15. After studying Biology at university and working as a secondary school teacher, I returned to my first love of illustration following the birth of my daughter in 2006.
What began with a name painting for her, grew into Baby Name Pictures, launched in 2008. Today, I work from my Devon studio, creating original watercolour illustrations and personalised gifts using traditional painting techniques, fine ink and coloured pencil.
Each painting is made by hand, with care and attention to the little details that make it special to the family receiving it.

Yes — all original artwork is created in my Devon studio.
Where do you post to?
I send name pictures all over the world from the UK. Please message if you want to check first.
What makes a baby gift “luxury”?
A luxury baby gift is one that is made with care, high-quality materials, and often personalised or handcrafted to create something lasting. My name pictures are all created lovingly in my Devon sudio.
How long does it take?
Because each piece is hand-painted to order, creation time allows for painting, drying, and finishing by hand. Current turnaround times 2-3 weeks plus delivery time.
Can I include pets, toys or other special details in the design?
Yes — rabbits, teddy bears, farm animals, favourite toys or pets can be gently incorporated into the personalised artwork, making it a true reflection of your child’s world.
What is your returns and refund policy?
Since every piece is hand painted to order, refunds aren’t offered simply for change of mind. However, I will keep you update with progress photographs and you receive a preview image before framing so you can check the design, and if a painting arrives damaged, I will replace it. Returns policy here
How are the paintings presented?
Each painting is carefully mounted and framed, ready to hang or gift. I use high-quality mounts chosen to complement the artwork — either a simple off-white that matches the watercolour paper, or a double mount with a coordinating colour to enhance the tones within the painting.
If you prefer to get the painting framed yourself, that option is available too.
If the painting is intended as a gift, it can also be wrapped and sent directly to the recipient, thoughtfully prepared and ready to open.
Can I include a personal message, date or special wording?
Yes — you can have details such as a date of birth, Christening date or special message added below the name in fine ink or watercolour to make the gift even more meaningful.

What size options are available for personalised baby name paintings?
You can choose from a selection of sizes listed in the shop, and I can also offer unframed and framed options in bespoke sizes if needed. Frames in the shop come in standard sizes that work beautifully with the artwork
What if I need my gift more quickly than usual?
If you need your personalised gift sooner than our typical 4-5 week creation and delivery time, please contact me. I’ll do my very best to accommodate a quicker turnaround where possible.
Can I have my order gift wrapped or sent directly as a present?
Yes — gift wrap and a special message on a tag can be added for a small extra charge. Packages are tied with classic raffia and presented in traditional coloured kraft papers to suit the occasion.
